Reference One of the reasons for writing this book is to do justice to the old native culture; that is to present beliefs and views of these native people as related by themselves. Non-native aythors or religious writers tend to discriminate native culture: that is they say shamanism, known as metawin in Swampy cree is a witchcraft or divination and that is evil. But I present this native shamanism as a psychic power. The difference between witchcraft and psychic poweris how you use this power which is inherent to humans. If you abuse this power then it it becomes witchcraft.Such abuse was committed by by an evil shaman to harass or destroy people. A good shaman used his powers to help or to defend his people. .

This book is one of two projects of the North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce commemorating the 50th anniversary of the City Of North Bay in 1975. The other chamber project, the North Bay Dollar, is described on Page6. Nipissing fro brule to booth reflects on the early Indian society and arrival of the district's first white men, the voyageurs, explorers and missionaries. We hop that it will stimulate and encourage its readers to pursue the study of the fascinating history of Canada's past. We are indebted to the author, Dr. Murray Leatherdale, for the countless hours of research and writing which he spent on behalf of the Chamber preparing this book. We also gratefully acknowledge the efforts of Bert Saunders who prepared all the artwork. Any profit realized from this publication will be channelled back into the community by way of the many civic projects of this Chamber of Commerce.

Spirit Bear is the story of Annuk, a young spirit bear cub happily growing up in the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia. Annuk learns what it means to be different when he discovers that he is white instead of black, like the rest of his family. He is a spirit bear, born with pure white fur from head to toe. One day, while testing his fishing skills, he slips and falls into the river and is swept downstream, far from the safety of his mother. Alone and lost, Annuk must make his way home through the many challenges and dangers of the rainforest. Along the way he is befriended by Kaya, a young sea wolf cub who knows the forest well, and helps him to escape the predators he encounters on his way back to his family. An entertaining story for kids of all ages!

Water Walkers is the story of an Ojibway girl named Mai. Her family members are walking around Lake Superior to raise awareness about the harm that is being done to the Great Lakes. At first, Mai is told she is too little to go but her grandmother says, "Even little people can do big things." As Mai walks along the lakeside path, she tries to find ways to help. Will the secret messages from the animals she sees on her journey show her how to help the water and mother Earth? Will Mai prove that she is a clever coyote girl? Can she become a good Water Walker? Water jWalkers is a tribute to the many Native women and men who in today's world have courageously walked countless miles to draw attention to the condition of water. The message of this diverse, environmental book is to protect the water.

Wapos Bay is a lighthearted stop-motion animation series about the adventures of three cree children living in remote northern Saskatchewan. Guided by elders, extended family and their own insatiable curiosity, T-Bear, Talon and Raven learn how to balance traditional ways with newer ones. Dennis and Melanie Jackson created this charming award-winning series. In The Elements, the survival skills of Talon, T-Bear, Raven and their mushom are tested by an unexpected storm.

The children are helping their mushom (grandfather) set up a cultural camp so young people can learn traditional ways. Bad weather hits and the radio, generator and ATV break down. Mushom leaves the camp for help but has an accident along the way.

Left alone, the children have several mishaps-including accidentally blowing up their ATV-and abandon the camp.

The family makes it home safely, but their journey to Elders Island teaches the children that taking shortcuts at any age is best avoid.
